Following the debate that has been taking place for the past two days around the absence of female authors on the list of “Grand Prix” nominees, the Festival has decided to invite all authors to vote freely in order to designate as winner the author of their choice.

Free will given to all authors
Breaking through an ultimate step in the democratization of the “Grand Prix” award’s nominative process (following reforms which occurred in 2013 and 2014), the Festival is submitting the election of the “Grand Prix” winner to the absolute free choice of authors starting as soon as this 2016 edition. No nominee list will therefore be proposed to voters and the choice of which colleague they will vote for, will be completely left up to them.*

The Festival thereby hopes that the current evolution taking place in the feminization of the field of comics will find a form of recognition through this “Grand Prix”, whenever authors themselves see it fit.

The Festival, a supporter of women’s creativity

The Festival also wishes to forcefully reaffirm that it is in the light of other actions that it carries out, that it’s relationship with today’s female comic book authors should be assessed (since the “Grand Prix” takes into account the work of an author over a long period of time).

In this regard, the Festival wishes to reiterate, that beyond all the evidence that can be found in its recent history of its ability to promote female authors, the best example of this promotion can be found in the 2016 Festival’s Official Selection in which ten of the selected books have women as authors.

It is these works that the Festival invites the public and journalists to discover. In the Festival’s eyes, they embody, along with the other selected authors, the present and the future of comics.

Authors at the heart of the Festival
Ever since its inception, 43 years ago, the International Angoulême Comics Festival has been focused on its authors. They are central to its purpose and its process of mediation with the public, that is specifically carried out in order to promote their work.
And it is in this perspective that the Festival is evolving in its “Grand Prix” selection method. The Festival hopes that through their votes the authors will once again, give the Festival their confidence and be by its side, as it strives to be by theirs.

* On a practical level, a new layout of the voting website (reserved for authors only) will be created by the Festival in the coming days. It will be accompanied by the creation of a suitable voting process in order to ensure the best possible election for the winner of the 43rd International Comics Festival “Grand Prix” award.
