Creation of the Konishi Prize for translations of Japanese manga into French

Each year, more than 1500 manga are translated from Japanese into French. For several years, the Japanese manga makes up about 40% of comic book publications in the French market. The progressive introduction of Japanese manga into the hexagon in the 1990s, as well as its phenomenal rise, would not have been possible without the passion and professionalism of French-language manga translators.

Through the quality of their work, and motivated by a profound interest for the eclecticism of stories coming out of Japan, translators play not only a role in disseminating Japanese civilization and culture, but they also function as guides and cartographers in a universe that can be continuously explored and rediscovered.

Aware of the importance of translations in the success of Japanese manga in France, and determined to amplify its development, the Japanese Embassy in France and the Konishi Foundation are pleased to announce the creation of the Konishi Prize for the translation of Japanese manga into French, in connection with the Konishi Prize for French-Japanese literary translation.

The first instance of the Konishi Prize for the translation of Japanese manga into French will honor the translation of a title published between October 2015 and September 2017. Ten titles will be nominated before a winner is chosen by a Grand Jury. The winner of the prize will be announced at the 45th annual Angoulême International Comics Festival, from January 25-28, 2018.
